Gerbrand studies extreme weather events, such as droughts, heatwaves or floods, and their impacts on society. In general, the impacts are larger when the regions are more vulnerable, but also when the regions are less prepared for such events. Being able to detect the occurrence of such events in an early stage is thus of critical importance.
