About

We collectively have 100+ years of research experience in early warning signals. We have identified dozens of signals, characterised them, and presented them to our peers. Early detection is a red thread through our disciplines, yet we do not attend the same conferences, do not read the same scientific journals and have very different backgrounds. That is precisely why many of the early warning signals are not acted upon in the anticipated field of application or are not recognised early enough by the relevant decision-makers; we do not know each other’s context, which prevents recognising any plausible connection between signals that seem radically uncorrelated but in reality are not. Better Wave establishes a platform where signals are initially just shared to stimulate learning and exchange, then aligned to facilitate comparison, model building and pattern recognition, and finally coherently used in various application contexts to foresee big disruptive events, act anticipatedly and mitigate negative impact on society - or foster positive effects.

Better Wave Manifest

We believe that it is better to wave a flag or signal early than to wait for a long-term worry to occur. Whether it's disease, system failure, or poverty, we envision a sustainable future for all.

We believe that detecting and intervening early is key to maintaining a healthy individual, animal, society, and planet. Therefore, we use advanced technologies such as deep learning models, remote sensing, and genetic testing to aid in early detection and prediction.

We believe that early detection and intervention increase individual autonomy and collective strength, rather than causing anxiety and polarisation. However, we recognise that this requires sensitivity, empathy, and a commitment to equity and justice. As we often do not have complete information when making early decisions, we need to establish a certain level of trust.

That's why we aim to develop a universal trust framework that can be applied to any field in which early detection is used. We acknowledge that each field has its own "black box," such as patient decision-making in genetics, virus transmission in virology, and subjective experience of pain in animals for pain detection. We believe that perspectives from a wide range of stakeholders are needed to generate a truly universal trust framework.

Education and awareness-raising are powerful tools that can empower individuals, communities, and societies to take an active role in their health and well-being.

Finally, we recognise that change is a challenging process, not a one-time event, and we commit to continuous learning, improvement, and collaboration to achieve our shared goal of a healthier, happier, and more sustainable world.

Therefore, we seek unusual collaborations to drive positive change.
